Here are some do's and don'ts for successful job-hunting.
Do
- Have a job-hunting strategy. Use all kind of methods of job-hunting.
- Take advantage of internet. You should try online job hunting including general job-hunting sites, industry-specific job sites, company sites, etc.
- Prepare a professional looking resume, use action verbs in your resume. Also for help analyzing your work experience, do complete a job-seeker accomplishments worksheet.
- Identify your key accomplishments. Use transferable skills explain your work experience for recent college grads and career changers.
- Develop a job skills portfolio, which shows everything you have to offer a prospective employer.
- Have multiple types of your resume, including a traditional formatted resume, text-based resume and Web-based resume.
- Follow-up all kinds of job leads and be persistent
- Provide your home phone, work phone, cell phone, and email to make sure a potential employer can reach you.
- Practice for your job interviews. Be sure and ask questions at the interview.
- Try to send thank you letters to all people who interview you.
Don’t
- Don't rely on a single job-hunting method, use various job hunting methods including online job hunting.
- Don't expect to get a new job quickly. Job-hunting takes time and patience. But do consider your strategies if you have been job-hunting for several months and have not had any success.
- Don't quit your present job until you have a new job. Also give proper notice when you quit your present job.
- Don't get discouraged if you’ve been fired or downsized in your current job.
